About meOriginally from New York, I’ve lived in Scotland for over 30 years. I hold a MSc in Urban and Regional Planning from Heriot-Watt University. Most of my working life has been in the voluntary sector: supporting, managing and developing a range of environmental and community projects throughout Scotland. My first introduction to planning came in 2000 when I was appointed Programme Manager for Planning Aid for Scotland. During this time I managed two training programmes and travelled across the country, working with community groups from as far afield as Shetland, Peterhead and Wigtown. My experience is unique. No one else can claim that they have helped deliver training to thousands of people across Scotland and worked with nearly all of the local authorities and the two national parks. I am now a ‘well-kent’ face in Scottish planning circles. My extensive work with community groups has given me a unique insight into the barriers that prevent people from participating effectively in planning (and planners and developers from effectively engaging with communities). In addition, to being a town planner, I am also a trained and experienced community mediator and a member of the Scottish Mediation Network (SMN). I am also on the Council of the Association for the Protection of Rural Scotland (APRS). I have the skills and knowledge to meet the challenge of getting better public participation in planning. |
